The Help Browser 2.0
====================
The Help Browser adds a window to WinHelp containing a File Manager-like
hierarchical display of the topics and links between them in the help file
being viewed. The window is activated via a 'Browse' button added
automatically to the WinHelp button bar. It also adds a 'Find text' button
to the WinHelp button bar which allows you to search all the help text
for a word.
Within the browse window, you can explore the topic hierarchy and switch
WinHelp straight to topics of interest. If you are a help file
developer, you can get a clear overall picture of the structure of your
help file while developing it. The display layout will be adjusted as
you move through the help file to accomodate help files where topics are
not arranged on a strict hierarchy (i.e. most of them).
You can also select topics of interest on the browse display and
print them. You can also print out the entire contents of a help file.
The first time a help file is browsed, The Help Browser scans the
help file and builds a database of topics and links. This can be
a little time-consuming for large help files, but only needs
to be done once.
The Help Browser works on Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11 and is compatible
with all help files compiled with version 3.1 of the help compiler.
It does not work under Windows NT.
This demo version of The Help Browser is restricted to working with
the Program Manager and File Manager help files.
Installation
------------
To install the demonstration, run SETUP.EXE from Program Manager. You
will be prompted for a directory in which to install the demo.
Full uninstallation instructions are included in the release notes; it
just involves deleting a few files, we don't muck with your .INI files
or your registration database.
Usage
-----
The install program creates a group called 'OCC Help Tools' in Program
Manager. Double click on the Help Browser Control entry and check the
box marked 'Enable Browse button' and click on OK.
Then enter Program Manager help. A 'Browse' button and a 'Find text' button
will be added to the usual buttons on the button bar.
Click on the 'Browse' button and wait a moment while a browser database
is created. The Browser window will now appear.
Click on the book icon beside a topic to expand or contract the
hierarchy at that point. Double click on a topic name to jump to that
topic.
Select topics of interest by holding down the Shift key and clicking on
a book icon in the browser window. A small tick appears alongside
the book icon to show the topic is selected. Hold down the
Ctrl key and click to toggle topic selection. Select 'Print selected
topics' from the Options menu to print all selected topics.
Select 'Print all topics' from the Options menu to print all topics.
